Bluesy, psychedelic, and refined – these are the qualities of Moses Guest’s 2004 release “Guest Motel”. The unique vocals and lyrics of Graham Guest are accompanied by an ultra-tight, but still expressive group of friends and musicians. There’s just something different about these guys that separates them from the rest of the guitar-jam crowd!

Lyrics

Preposterous Box

For the light of the morning has come
And the night of the dead horse is run
I will no longer wake up in that cell
Now I’m happy as well

By the light of the morning has come
We put an end to the corporation
I will no longer squander life in hell
Because I’m happy as well
Because I’m happy as well

You smell the fear
Of the retarded puppeteer
In his preposterous box
His sticking by the clocks

I whisper and down comes the veil
Always and already set sail
The more I think and set it down by line
The door is open all the time

By the right of a motherless son
And the fight of a devilish tongue
You hear the ringing of the Saturday bell
Now we are happy as well
Now we are happy as well

You smell the fear
Of the retarded puppeteer
In his preposterous box
His sticking by the clocks

That tap black holes into your head
‘Cause you administrate the dead
But not today, the box is gone
I’ll take tomorrow for my own

It’s Our Love

The sky is falling but we’re not dead yet
It’s always falling all around your head
Got to take your independence from a bad dream or bad scene
10,000 miles so get back in it

Why oh why must we be so damn hip?
I thought everyone was tripping on the mothership
Wheel keep a spinning; got to crack that whip because
It’s our love

It’s our love
It’s our love
It’s our love

I heard a whisper behind my door
There was something scratching upon my floor
I felt a low, slow thunder rumbling through my life
And I’ve got to take this information to the city

My oh my, we got a whole lot left
We put the notice on the sailing ship
And you will get your invitation if you haven’t yet
Because it’s our love…

It’s our love…

Invictus

From the night that is my cover
Black as pitch from pole to pole
I thank the gods, be they whatever
For my unconquerable soul

In the clutch of circumstance
I have not winced or cried aloud
Under the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody but unbowed

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms the horror of the shade
And yet the menace of the years
Shall always find me unafraid
And that’s the way it has to be…

I lIve inside these things I say
Just like I live inside my home
Though in this world of words I play
Ultimately, I am alone

So when the end is standing by
Shadows long from head to toe
My blade will cut both deep and dry
And night will fall upon the floor

It matters not how straight the gate
How charged with punishments the scroll
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul
And that’s the way it has to be…

2 Of Everybody

Well I think everybody is living twice
You are another body in this very life
So you think there’s no connection
But convection brings the recipe to life
And the confection is the same
Because there is another person who is you
I bet you’re even wearing the same shoes

So there happens to be two of everybody
And there’s nothing you can do about it

Playing rock ‘n’ roll the other night
In a sleepy little town outside of Dallas
And in the other band was another Graham
And his wife who’s name is Jennifer is you
I can pinch myself to death so I wake up
But I still dream about it
What a photograph or an epitaph
Here lies everybody times two

So there happens to be two of everybody
And there’s nothing you can do about it
So there happens to be two of everybody
And there’s nothing you can do

Well I think everybody is living twice
You are another body in this very life
So you think there’s no connection
But convection brings the recipe to life
And the confection is the same
Because there is another person who is you
I bet you’re even wearing the same shoes

So there happens to be two of everybody
And there’s nothing you can do about it
So there happens to be two of everybody
And there’s nothing that you can do…

Victim of Hours

Move on! Got to move along now
So long! Been so long in this town
Like a blackbird breaking the window
You got to wheel and fly – fly on!
‘Cause I can’t live in the shadow
Of the corporation – hell no!

For the victim of the hours
Ain’t no power in restraint
So I’m climbing up the tower
For to register my complaint
It’s my private revolution
It’s just something that I’ve got to try
Got to worry – in a hurry

Groove on! From that tired old sound
New song! Write a better one down
Got to draw one out of the flowers
And the burning sun – shine on!
‘Cause I can’t live in the shadows
Of anyone – right on!

For the victim of the hours
Ain’t no power in restraint
So I’m climbing up the tower
For to register my complaint
It’s my private revolution
It’s just something that I’ve got to try
Got to worry – in a hurry

And this capital aggravation
It’s the station of my life
So I try to make occasion
For abrasion and for strife
Push into it – looking through it
And it’s just something that has got to die
Got to worry…

Jackson

I’m going back to Jackson
Coming down the 59
And the road is so relaxing
On a frosty moonlit light
I’m coming down from Carolina

I’m heading back to Jackson
I’m riding down the Dixie line
And the road is kinda taxing
Yeah but every mile I drive
I’m getting closer every time

So I’m feeling better now
Than I have in quite a while
So I have to break a smile
Even though my home is seldom known
I’m going back

So you say that I’m a fool
But I know what you can do
Because I’m taking it down the line
Always and already operating
Out of time

So I’m going back to Jackson
Coming down the 59
And the road is so relaxing
On a frosty moonlit light
I’m coming down from Carolina

I’m heading back to Jackson
I’m riding down the Dixie line
And the road is kinda taxing
Yeah but every mile I drive
I’m getting closer every time

Double-Double-Double God

Vision of a little child
Standing in the sun
On the playground by the lake he saw
The burning up of everyone
Double-double-double god is here
He’s eight times removed from the one
The future is really quite clear
Double-double-double god has come

Double-double-double god…

I thought everyone was everyone
And philosophy would find
A common chord for all the gods
A tie with which to bind
But someone did something to someone
And the holy land was dried up and left behind
Now the penny arcade prophets have returned to claim
Anything but peace of mind

Double-double-double god…

He’s eight times removed from the one
Standing in the sun
On the playground by the lake he saw
The burning up of everyone

Dead Again

Morning is a summer
Every day of my life
And the sun in my window
Takes away from the night
Because I love the darkness
By the moon, I alight
And on the ground, I am reaching
Through the gloom
For the right…

To wrap myself in sorrow
For the pain of everyone
‘Cause I do not think tomorrow
Will provide this time
With a happy line
Because we’re dead

Any child can smell a madman
Though the man he just might like
And in his room
With a curtain
It’s a standard lullaby
But it isn’t evil
So be damned out of sight
We slipped into the shadow
Understanding nothing right

To wrap myself in sorrow
For the pain of everyone
‘Cause I do not think tomorrow
Will provide this time
With a happy line
Because we’re dead

Don’t want to die
Sleeping at night
Don’t want to die

Baby, Don’t Take Your Love Out on Me

Baby, don’t take your love out on me
I don’t understand ‘cause I ain’t done nothing, you see
She said, that’s exactly what I mean
And I said, Baby, just don’t take your love out on me

Some say I’m lazy or crazy for drinking alone
But I wouldn’t do it if I had someone to drink with at home
But she’s always working so hard, it’s breaking my heart
And the older I get, the more things start falling apart

Baby, don’t take your love out on me…

I think I remember forgetting to leave the light on
Or maybe I forgot to remember to stop thinking at all
What can you say when you’re wasting away every night
And why can’t I remember to think of things right

When I was a kid, I was dreaming
A particular song in my head
I sit here today and I see that I’m singing
That very same song to bring home my bread

Baby, don’t take your love out on me…
