Best Laid Plans is the outfit’s sixth album and will excite fans of classic guitar-driven jam-rock as well as those who just love a good song! Over three years removed from their 2004 release Guest Motel, the album proves that Guest and the band haven’t lost a step when it comes to formulating memorable songs with plenty of entertaining instrumental interplay.

Lyrics

Best Laid Plans

Big Southeast Texas city
I’ll tell you where I’m from
Some say, “What a pity”
But we shall overcome

Escape to Colorado
Steamboat to Winter Park
Coming down the Mountain
Detour ‘round Utah

So happy when we travel
Rolling in my van
Watch it come unraveled
So much for best laid plans

The moose is loose in Wyoming
And we love the old Trap Bar
It’s 3 o’clock but who’s counting
You can never go too far

What do you say in Montana?
Man, I’ve got to get it done
There’s an eagle in the sky
And the burning of the sun

So happy when we travel…

Cascading out in Seattle
In a state of Washington
From Boise back to Eugene
And Portland, Oregon

Up in Northern California
I’m hangning with my friends
Down Geary Street in Frisco
The good times never end

So happy when we travel…

Bird

Talk, talk, talking about it
It was a conversation
And it’s a little like
I’m making you up the way I want to
But we’re having some fun
The meaning is whatever it is, the way you want it
It’s not a competition though it’s
Certainly not perfection, but it’s automatic
Like your own reflection

The words are not connected
But I can understand
Because I do respect it
This bird in my hand

Walk, walk, walking around it
Do we have translation?
‘Cause it’s a little like
We’re making it up the way we want to
But we get the job done
The feeling is whatever it is whenever you have it
And the words always come ‘cause it’s
Certainly not perfection, but it’s automatic
Like your own reflection

The words are not connected
But I can understand
Because I do respect it
This bird in my hand

Colorado

Take a train, loco ride
Through the rain down, up and down
For the mountain; it’s a higher place to fly
Well who am I?

You hit the disco; dance ‘til two
Take the el camino and a couple of friends with you
You hit the city, and you’re floating beneath the lights
You get the low-down, just for coming here

The big ol’ man with the band giving money out
The cellophane, take a train ride runaround
You disappear for a year like a little mouse
Life is good

Life is good in a box out in Colorado…

You lie down, like everybody
You lie ‘round, like everyone
You saw what you are – you’re everybody
You saw what you are…
‘Cause you live with the steepness of gardens across your shoulders
You saw what you are

You hit the Kingpin half past three
Stars crash gently on your sleeve
It’s time to take jesus on a way one-way ride
Heaven help him, just for coming here

The big ol’ man with the band giving money out
The cellophane, take a train ride runaround
You disappear for a year like a little mouse
Life is good

Life is good in a box out in Colorado…
Take a train

Burnin’ Round The Sun

How can the words out my mouth
Let you know what I mean
When everything I start to say
Stumbles into a dream
Everyone I’ve come to know
Is like a rabbit on the run
Never know who might stop by
Burnin’ around the sun

You go out running around because
You wake up lying down
You leave out from the house
To see what you are
To see what you’re trying to do

Do what you try to get through
But what’s the point of it
Might as well slow down
Because the bad day’s coming on its own
It’s going to find you all alone
And you’ll be one tight brother on the fly

Bi-Polar Express

Oh, how I wonder why you make me want to kill myself so badly
I thought I had a warm heart, but the evidence in this event is nasty

When your voice sounds, well my heart pounds, and I shut down my head

Everything you say must be the truth in every way, no doubt about it
But from where I stand, you’re bluffing on your hand but wouldn’t know it

When your voice sounds, well my heart pounds, and I shut down my head
So you feel around, with your pants down, for a helping hand

But I fly…
Away from you
And you lie…
Away from me

It’s been a fine free day without you here
I’ve got this lovely space within my ear
Where once the sound of bullshit rang
I now can hear most everything
And someone kicked your crutches down
He kicked you there upon the ground
But sadly, you would not know about it

Oh, how I wonder why you make me want to kill myself so badly
I thought I had a warm heart, but the evidence in this event is nasty

When your voice sounds, well my heart pounds, and I shut down my head
So you feel around, with your pants down, for a helping hand

Shine

It’s been a long sleepless dream. Do you know what I mean? Then no one knows better than you.
And however I try, not even I can put it all together right.

To wake up and discover the longing for my mother is through. The immutable connection, this manna of affection, is true.
If only I could have known, before I was grown, I would have been there by her side. To help things along, to give them a song, to sing three sweet babies goodnight.

To wake up and discover, not only has my mother come true; to three sisters, I’m a brother. Now just how does that sound to you? Well it suits me just fine, and it’s about time. I am beside myself with this love. I cried for a sign, and I cried through the night until finally it did shine.

So who is this guy with a bird in his eye, who cannot be bothered with love? Now he’s built us a home, but he’s always alone, ’cause he just can’t get nothing right.

To wake up and discover, not only has my mother come true; to three sisters, I’m a brother. Now just how does that sound to you? Well it suits me just fine, and it’s about time. I am beside myself with this love. I cried for a sign, and I cried through the night until finally it did shine.

NOLA

I used to live ‘N’ ‘O’ ‘L’ ‘A’
When I was in my younger days
Off Fontainebleu and Rue Vincennes
I rode the Green Wave to old Tulane

I got the boot uptown from Jean Lafitte’s downtown
So I stumbled home by the St. Charles line
And at the break of dawn, I reached the Audubon
Oh such a crazy night! Oh such a night!

Yo!
Hey o’ ‘N’ ‘O’!
The show must go
On as before.
But with that change
Can’t stay the same
Your future twin
Is New Orleans

But they was not upon that hill
It was more like things in Waterville
Fighting for air with dirty hands
This town was hanging by old rubberbands

Et tous les nez that day sont etoufee that day
Avec Le Ponchartrain and the rain
And when the flood subsides, amidst the terrified
I heard the music die, with no refrain..

But yo!
Hey o’ ‘N’ ‘O’!
The show must go
On as before.
But with that change
Can’t stay the same
Your future twin
Is New Orleans

Mario, The Offender

Innocence, in a sense, is a security
You hop the fence to the land of opportunity
Through city streets or mountains of obscurity
With every step you’re shaking with identity

Petulance is alive in the community
You jump the gun at the promise of prosperity
And on the run in the shadow of identity
Your self is broken glass in the menagerie

Hell no. You can’t beat that. Just look in the mirror.
What you see. Well that’s not me.

They call him Bartolomeo, but he’s actually Jon.
They say he’s got things for sale. Now won’t you give me one.

A cold day in winter can’t hide it
A warm day in summer won’t make you come down
The bluebirds are breaking the window
Then drown the sea

The offender Mario. He’s blowing shit on my lawn.
And I want to kill hee-o. I’m want to give him some.

Everyone is somebody or so it seems
Like rabbits on the run or maybe you and me
In your shoes, you’re planning your prosperity
But nothing seems to work the way it’s supposed to be

Hell no. You can’t beat that. Just look in the mirror.
What you see. Well that’s not me.

Wheel

The world is swinging
It’s suspended by the things that we say
Despite all our inventions
We can’t keep things from slipping away
We seek peace out in the East
And do our best out in the West
All with the sneaking apprehension
That things will never come to rest
So put your guns down
And take a look around you today

So long… Got my hands on the wheel and I won’t come back…

I was young, but now the middle
Has just split up my invincible ways
Despite all my retention
Of everything about the old days
I did freeze up in the North
Now I roll about the South
And all those words that I once spoke
No longer flowing from my mouth
So I bring my voice down
And take a look around me today
